Bryant vows to make life tougher for criminals As part of his campaign for lieutenant governor, State Auditor Phil
Bryant introduced a set of proposals aimed at fighting crime Tuesday.
Bryant said if he's elected, he will push for legislation that would
stiffen penalties for certain crimes including an automatic life sentence
for those convicted of a second crack or crystal meth manufacturing or
distributing charge. The announcement came as Bryant introduced a television
ad expected to begin airing today that mentions his anti-crime proposals. "I
talked to law enforcement agencies around the state, and their answer
for fighting drugs was to take the drug dealers out of society. There's
no other way to cure a (habitual) drug dealer," Bryant said. Bryant's crime removal effort is targeting crack cocaine and methamphetamine manufacturers and dealers. "They are a scourge among our communities," Bryant said. "Those that are dealing should be dealt with severely." Bryant is proposing a second conviction of dealing cocaine or meth would result in a life sentence. "This sounds harsh," Bryant said. "But, the only way to stop drug dealers is to remove them from society." Bryant said he will need the support of the senators and representatives to help present legislation to give harsher punishment to drug dealers. He said he will be asking local leaders to introduce the bill when the Senate and the House reconvene in January. Jamie Franks says crime is not a "real issue" Following Phil Bryant's news conference, Jamie Franks was quoted in an Associated Press article saying that crime is not a "real issue." Franks criticized Phil Bryant's anti-crime proposals saying: "He just doesn't want to talk about the real issues.". Jamie Franks, faced off in an eight-question forum. Bryant, a Republican, opened with telling the crowd of about 100 people that Mississippi is on the move and praised Gov. Haley Barbour for his Hurricane Katrina recovery programs. Franks Continues to Throw Eaves Under the Bus During the closing remarks, Bryant said after listening to Franks say many times what he would do as lieutenant governor to regulate Barbour, he must have given up hope John Eaves, the Democratic candidate for governor, is going to win. "All we've heard is how he'll respond to Haley," Bryant said. Join the Fun |
